The Funeral Profession Take On the Lyke Wake Walk

On Saturday, July 2 2005, funeral directors and suppliers to the profession laced up their walking boots, packed their rucksacks and set off on the Lyke Wake Walk.

Around 60 intrepid walkers embarked on the 40m (67km) hike across the North York Moors from Osmotherley to Beacon Howes, near Ravenscar. The route is punctuated by a series of stone circles and standing stones used by the urn folk who lived on the moors in the Bronze Age to mark the burial sites of their elders.

Some were raising money for local charities while others were simply putting their physical and mental fitness to the test. All, however, were there to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Association of Funeral Directors, which supports the bereaved and is the ‘voice of the profession’, representing the interests of funeral directors conducting 85% of UK funerals.

The walkers may have hobbled across the finish line nursing blisters and aching limbs, but the smiles told the real story as they reflected on their achievement. Congratulations to all those who took part!
